A B-Notice is a notification you receive when there’s a mismatch between the tax information you’ve provided to Uber and the records of the IRS. This could be your name or taxpayer identification number (TIN) not aligning correctly.
Updating your tax information
If you’re an Uber partner and you get a B-Notice:
- Update your tax details in Uber’s Tax Settings. You can do this by logging into the Driver Portal on a desktop.
- Your updated tax information should match exactly what’s on your tax return:
- For individuals: Provide your first and last name and your Social Security Number (SSN).
- For legal entities like LLCs or corporations: Provide the legal name and the Employer Identification Number (EIN).
Avoiding backup withholding
- Uber will withhold 24% of your earnings for taxes, known as backup withholding, if you don’t update your information in time.
- This withholding is reported to you and the IRS on a Form 1099.
- Forms 1099 are usually due by January 31 of the following year.
How to prevent or stop backup withholding
- Update or confirm accurate tax details within the B-Notice grace period to avoid backup withholding.
- If backup withholding has started, it will stop once you provide correct and up-to-date tax information.
- If you believe your current tax information is correct, validate it by saving the Digital W9 Form under Tax Settings.

- Uber cannot offer tax advice.
