I want to drive or deliver in a new city

Switching to a new city with Uber

If you’re planning to drive in a different city, keep in mind:

  • Background checks: Different places have specific rules, so you’ll need to complete a new background check if you switch cities.
  • Document updates: Be prepared to upload new or additional documents before you can drive in the new city.
  • No driving or delivering: You can’t take trip or delivery requests on the Uber app while your city change is processing.
  • Processing time: The process takes 3 to 5 business days. This timeline applies every time you switch cities.
  • New York City waitlist: Drivers looking to accept rider trips in NYC will be placed on a waitlist due to high driver numbers.

Before you switch: Check if Uber is available in your new city by visiting Uber’s city list. You can also check the requirements for driving in your new city on our Driver Requirements page and our Vehicle Requirements page. Make sure to select your new city in the lower right corner of the page to see your local requirements.

Driving Temporarily in Another City

We’re unable to support temporary city changes. The update process takes up to 5 days. Driving in a market other than the one you’re signed up for could result in deactivation.

What happens to your Uber Pro status and rewards when you switch cities?

When you switch cities, your Uber Pro status and rewards are affected in the following ways:

  • If you move to a new city and want to drive or deliver there, your Pro status will be based on the requirements of that city.
  • Once the switch is complete, you’ll get an email confirmation. Once you’ve received that email, you’ll be able to view your new tier requirements in the Uber Pro Hub.
  • Your Pro status is recalculated every 3 months for drivers who provide rides and every month for couriers who do deliveries. Your status will be calculated in the location where you’ve completed the most trips since your last recalculation.
