If you received a B-Notice, it means that there is a mismatch between the tax information you provided to Uber and the records of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This could be because your name or Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is not correct.
You can avoid any issues by updating your tax information in Uber’s Tax Settings. You can access your Tax Settings in the Driver app.
Your updated tax information should match exactly what’s on your tax return.
If you don’t update your information in time, Uber will withhold 24% of your earnings for taxes. This is called backup withholding. Backup withholding is reported on box 4 of the 1099-K to you and the IRS on a Form 1099. Form 1099 is usually due by January 31 of the following year.
To avoid backup withholding, you need to update or confirm your accurate tax details within the B-Notice grace period. If backup withholding has already started, it will stop once you provide correct and up-to-date tax information.
If you believe that your current tax information is correct, you can validate it by saving the Digital W9 Form under Tax Settings.
As a reminder, Uber does not give tax advice. Drivers are encouraged to seek guidance from a qualified tax service like Turbotax and/or contact an independent tax professional for specific answers to tax questions.
