How do I order alcohol on Uber Eats?

Uber is committed to delivering responsibly, globally. Whether it’s alcohol, tobacco, over-the-counter medication, energy drinks, or other age-restricted products, we take extra steps to ensure these items are only delivered to customers who meet legal requirements.

This page explains how our age-restricted delivery process works, what you need to do as a customer, and what to expect during delivery.

What to Expect: Our Age-Restricted Delivery Flow

When your order contains age-restricted items, we’ll notify you before delivery and apply one or more of the following steps:

Step 1. Pre-Delivery Notification

You’ll see a message in-app or during checkout informing you that age verification will be required at drop-off.

Step 2: Sobriety Check

Couriers are required to check for sobriety before handing over alcohol products. It’s illegal to deliver alcohol to a customer who is intoxicated. If the recipient appears this way, the courier must return the order to the merchant.

Step 3: Requesting ID and Checking Identity

The courier will request a valid, government-issued photo ID regardless of your age.

If you do not present a valid ID or your appearance does not match the photo on the provided document, the courier will be unable to complete the required checks, and your order will be returned to the store.

Step 4: Scanning ID

Once the ID has been provided, the courier will scan the front of the document through their Driver App for Uber Eats. This process usually takes a few seconds to complete to confirm the recipient’s age and the validity of the ID document in real time. If the scan verification fails, the courier will be prompted to manually input your full name, date of birth, and the document’s expiry date into their app.

🔐 The ID scan is used only to verify age and the validity of your ID to enable us to deliver the order - not for marketing or profiling. Scanned images of your ID are not retained once verification is complete.

Step 5: Delivery Complete

Once the verification process is complete, the courier will hand over your order and complete the delivery.

Acceptable Forms of ID

To receive an age-restricted order, you must show a valid, government-issued photo ID. Accepted documents include any of the following that have not expired:

  • passport
  • driving license or provisional driving license
  • proof of age cards with a PASS logo, such as a CitizenCard or Young Scot card (UK only)
  • EU national identity card

Please note, digital IDs are not currently accepted.

How We Protect Your Privacy

We know how important your privacy is. The ID scan is used only to verify age and the validity of your ID, enabling us to deliver your order - not for marketing or profiling. The data is encrypted and never shared outside of the verification process. It is processed in line with our strict privacy and data protection standards. We do not retain scanned images of your ID once verification is complete. For more information, read our Privacy Notice.

FAQs

What happens if I don’t share my ID?

If you’re unable to provide an accepted form of ID, the courier will not be able to hand over the items and the entire order will be returned in line with our terms of service. Refund eligibility may vary.

Why is the delivery person scanning my ID?

ID scanning software is a technology improvement that helps to verify that delivery recipients are over 18 years of age and can legally have age-restricted items delivered to them. You’ll be notified in the app if an ID check will be required, and the scan will be conducted through the Driver App for Uber Eats. Having a robust age verification process also discourages underage customers from trying to order these types of deliveries via Uber Eats.

What if my ID is expired?

Unfortunately, expired IDs cannot be accepted. Please ensure your ID is valid and up-to-date to order age-restricted items on Uber Eats.
