Features for deaf and hard of hearing drivers

Uber is committed to supporting drivers with different hearing abilities. We offer optional features in the Driver app to help make driving with Uber more accessible:

  • Flashing Trip Requests: When you receive a new trip request, the app alerts you with a flashing light along with the standard audio notification.

  • Rider Notification: The app lets riders know their driver is deaf or hard of hearing, promoting better communication.

  • Trip Destination Prompt: Riders get an additional prompt to enter their trip destination. This helps ensure you have the information you need before the trip begins.

  • Text-Only Messaging: Riders can’t call but can text you if they need to communicate, ensuring you won’t miss any important information.

Enabling accessibility features

To turn on these features in the Uber Driver app:

  1. Tap the menu button (three horizontal lines) in the top left corner.
  2. Select Account then App Settings.
  3. Choose Accessibility.
  4. Tap Deaf or hard of hearing.
  5. The Use flash for requests feature is enabled by default. If you prefer not to use it, you can toggle it off at the top of the list.

Once you accept a ride, the rider sees a message letting them know about your hearing status. This fosters clear and effective communication right from the start.
