Live Video for Guardians - Frequently Asked Questions

General

What is live video?

Live video is a new feature that allows guardians to watch their teen’s or kid’s trip from the driver’s phone and see what’s happening in real time. Currently, live video is only available on Android and iOS in select countries.

How does live video work?

The driver’s Uber app uses their phone’s camera and microphone to show you live video of the rider’s trip. If the feature is available, you will receive a notification as soon as the trip begins. You can watch by selecting the Start button. The rider and the driver will be notified if you are watching.

When is live video on?

Live video only turns on if a guardian starts watching it during the trip. Drivers will be notified when it begins, and it stops automatically when the trip ends.

Can guardians talk to drivers during the live video?

No. Live video is one-way. Guardians can watch but cannot communicate with the driver through video.

Is live video also recorded?

Yes. Recording continues while you watch live video.

Where is live video available?

This feature is available for teen trips throughout the US, and for kids trips where Uber Kids is available.

What should I do if I witness an emergency during my teen’s live-stream trip?

Call 911 (or your local emergency services) immediately — they are always the first step. Once emergency services have been contacted, report the incident to Uber through the app by going to your trip history, selecting the relevant trip, and tapping “Get Help.” You can also contact the rider or driver directly, or continue to track the trip in the app while waiting for emergency responders.

Who can watch live video?

Only guardians can watch live video and only during the ride. Drivers can’t share video with anyone else.

Can anyone play back a recording of live video later?

Neither the driver, rider, nor guardian has access to the recordings after the trip. Uber can only review recordings if there’s a safety issue reported.

Will the rider know I’m watching live video?

Yes, they will receive a notification that you are watching.

Will live video continue if drivers are on a phone call?

Live video will pause if the driver makes or takes phone calls, or if they use an app that requires use of their microphone. Video-only recording will continue, but the microphone cannot be used for audio recording while in use by another app. Live video will restart when the phone call is done, but only if they are still on the trip.

How long are recordings stored?

Recordings are automatically deleted after 14 days unless included in a safety report.

Can the live video recording be submitted as part of a safety report?

If a safety incident is reported, a member of Uber’s Safety team will review the report and may watch and/or listen to the footage as part of the investigation. Appropriate action will then be taken in accordance with our policies.
