Screening process

Unless you’re driving or delivering in New York City (where all drivers are provided notice of their conditional engagement before a criminal background check is performed), you must pass a background check before you can accept requests using the Driver app. This doesn’t include a credit check.

Background checks usually take 3-5 business days to complete, but can take longer depending on factors like county courthouse processes. Uber can’t expedite your background check report. Uber may require additional time to review background check results after you receive your completed report from one of our third-party background check providers (Checkr, HireRight, and Samba Safety).

What’s needed for background checks

You’ll need to provide:

  • Your consent to a background check before we start it. Where permitted, this allows Uber to request additional background checks during the term of your relationship with Uber.
  • A valid Social Security number (SSN).
  • A valid US driver’s license.

More about background checks

  • Background screenings can include your entire adult history beginning at age 18, depending on applicable regulations, laws, and practices in the city where you want to drive or deliver.
  • A new background check report is required at least annually (more often in some cities). You will also be enrolled in a new offense notification program, which proactively notifies Uber of relevant changes in your criminal history.
