Event or venue surcharges

Additional surcharges may apply to your trip in certain cities or certain parts of a city. Certain venues or events may have pickup and dropoff zones that extend up to a few blocks away from the property. In these cases, surcharges may overlap with neighboring properties and affect trips within the area.

Depending on the charge and location, these additional charges may be retained by your driver, or paid by your driver to Uber or Uber-related entities. In some cases, these charges are then remitted to third-party entities, such as partner companies, or event and venue operators.

Surcharge types and uses

Surcharges are collected for several different purposes depending on the event and/or venue in question, and help ensure a more intuitive, reliable, and comfortable experience for both drivers and riders.

Driver event surcharge

These surcharges:

  • Apply to trips beginning or ending at large event locations that are expected to generate a lot of requests and complex dropoffs and pickups, which often present logistical challenges at the event location
  • Are paid partially or in full to drivers to help increase drivers for the event through earnings promotions

Uber venue or event surcharge

These surcharges:

  • Apply to trips beginning or ending at or near certain venues or special events where an elevated pickup and dropoff experience has been put in place for riders and drivers
  • Are collected to offset costs that Uber and/or the event or venue operator incur to help improve the experience and can include designated seating areas, wifi access, phone charging facilities, tenting, and instructional signage for riders, as well as in-app instructions and manual pickup and dropoff zone refinement, staffing, wayfinding and/or traffic infrastructure for a smoother pickup and dropoff

How to know if a trip has a surcharge

When you request a trip, the event surcharges will be automatically included in the upfront price or estimated price range you see before requesting. You can also view the amount of the surcharges on the Fare Breakdown screen within the app.

To get to the fare breakdown:

  1. Select the price displayed next to the vehicle option
  2. Select the information icon

The surcharges will either appear as part of the Tolls, Surcharges, and Fees item on your trip receipt or will be separately itemized.
