Uber Eats is launching an in-app promotion for Black-owned independent restaurants in select cities in the United States and Canada. To make it as easy as possible for Uber Eats users to support their favorite Black-owned businesses on the app, customers will receive a $0 Delivery Fee. This offer does not apply to franchise restaurants.
If you see a Black-owned restaurant that is not included in this promotion, it could be for the following reasons:
1. The restaurant does not qualify as a small-to-medium-sized restaurant
2. The restaurant is not in one of the cities where this initiative is offered
3. The restaurant has opted-out of this initiative or has not opted-in yet
WHAT STEPS DO YOU TAKE TO ENSURE A DIVERSE SELECTION OF RESTAURANTS ARE AVAILABLE ON YOUR PLATFORM?
Our role as a platform entails getting people what they are looking for. We take user feedback very seriously and it directs our restaurant acquisition efforts. Every time someone searches for a restaurant or a type of food, they are telling us where we should be focused.
I SEE A RESTAURANT INCLUDED IN THE CAMPAIGN BUT I KNOW THE OWNER IS NOT BLACK. WHAT STEPS ARE YOU TAKING TO ENSURE THE LISTED RESTAURANTS ARE BLACK-OWNED?
We're working with a wide range of local organizations to source Black-owned restaurants and we're continuing to work with these organizations to ensure the accuracy of our lists.
HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THE LISTS OF RESTAURANTS?
Groups of employees across Uber, including members and allies of the Black @ Uber employee leadership group, worked together to generate lists of Black-owned independent restaurants. These lists were compiled from publicly available sources along with input from local organizations and business associations across the US and Canada.
In response to requests from Uber Eats users, we have prioritized speed with this grassroots effort to support small businesses. All restaurants included at launch have received instructions on how to opt-out of the program or to recommend additional businesses to include.
WILL UBER COVER THE COST OF THE MARKETPLACE FEE?
While Uber Eats will offer a $0 Delivery Fee, there is no change to the Marketplace Fee. Marketplace Fees fund the services that restaurants have come to expect from Uber Eats. Reducing them puts the safety and reliability of the marketplace at risk for everyone. This project is focused on helping Uber Eats users easily support the Black-owned restaurants in their communities.
WHAT CITIES ARE YOU RUNNING THIS CAMPAIGN IN?
At launch, we are focused on major US & Canada metropolitan areas where Uber Eats has a presence. We will expand this project as our lists grow.
