British Columbia Driver & Courier Benefits - Overview and FAQ
British Columbia’s Bill 48 provides new rights and protections for all online platform workers, effective September 3, 2024.
WorkSafeBC Coverage (Workers’ Compensation)
You are now covered by WorkSafeBC for any work-related injuries or illnesses that occur while you are working on the Uber platform:
- What it Covers: This includes workers’ compensation benefits for lost wages and vocational rehabilitation services to help you return to work.
- Cost: This coverage is provided at no cost to you. Uber is responsible for registering and paying all premiums to WorkSafeBC.
- How to File a Claim: If you have a work-related injury, seek medical attention as needed. You must also contact WorkSafeBC directly to apply for benefits and report your injury or illness. You can reach them at WorksafeBC.com or by calling 1-888-967-5377.
Suspension & Deactivation Protections
You have new rights regarding changes to your account status.
- Written Notice: If your account is suspended or deactivated, you must be provided with a written notice of the reason, unless the deactivation is for “just cause” (serious misconduct). In some cases, you may receive compensation instead of notice.
- Suspension Limits: You cannot be temporarily suspended or waitlisted for more than 14 days unless it is required by law or you have not responded to a request for information or documents.
Offer & Tip Transparency
You are entitled to more information before and after a trip.
- Offer Cards: Before you accept a work assignment, you must be shown the pickup and delivery locations and your estimated earnings for that assignment.
- Tip Protection: You are legally guaranteed to receive 100% of all tips provided by customers. Uber’s policy has always been to pass on 100% of tips, and this will continue.
