Large Group Orders FAQ

General Information

What are large group orders?

Uber Eats orders for 10 or more people are considered large group orders. When you start a group order, you invite guests to add items with a shareable link and then check out once the order is ready. The order may be paid using one payment method or split among the group so that each participant pays for their own portion.

Tips:

  • Schedule large orders at least 24 hours in advance of your desired delivery time so the restaurant has sufficient time to prepare.
  • We recommend keeping large group orders to 100 or fewer participants.

What restaurants fulfill large group orders?

These orders can be placed with designated boxed catering restaurants. You can find participating restaurants on the Uber Eats app by browsing Boxed Catering on the Category page.

Note: Some restaurants limit the number of participants they can accommodate for large group orders. You can use filters when placing the order to specify your group size.

How do I create a large group order?

You can place a large group order by sharing a link with participants to add their own items.

To place a large group order:

  1. Open your Uber Eats app or sign in to ubereats.com.
  2. Select “Boxed Catering” on the “Category” page.
  3. Indicate your group size (1-10, 11-24, 25+ people).
  4. Select your preferred merchant.
  5. Select “Group Order” under the merchant name and address.
  6. Set the following parameters:

Order name: The group order name defaults to the creator’s name, but you can customize it as desired. If you’re an admin creating an order for every day of the week, change the name to the date of the order (for example, “Melt Lunch 3-17-22”).

Deadline: Add a deadline if you want individuals to add in their order by a certain time or date. You can choose to manually check out once the order deadline has passed or choose for the order to be submitted automatically when the deadline passes.

Note: You can manually check out early even if you have set a deadline. When you check out, the cart will lock for all guests.

Payment method: Use this parameter to select the payment method. There are two options:

  • “You pay for everybody”: Group orders default to this option. If you are an admin that manages the budget, this is the best group order option for you, because it allows you to set an order limit.
  • “Guests pay for themselves:” Participants pay for their own order, taxes, and fees. Each participant will have to be logged into their Uber Eats account in order to provide payment information. (An order can be split a maximum of 18 ways.)

Invite guests: Click this button to generate a link to send out to participants.

If ordering from multiple restaurants, repeat steps 1-6 above to create multiple carts. You can view all your carts from the carts tab simultaneously.

To finish your order:

  1. Enter or review the delivery address and select “Create order.”
  2. Click “Invite participants” using the app and “share the order link” provided so participants can add their items.
  3. Select “View menu” to add your own items to the order.
  4. Once participants (including yourself) are done adding items, go to “Checkout” to lock the order.
  5. Review your delivery details and place your order.
  6. Track the status of your order in the app or online.

How do participants place their orders?

  1. Click the group order link and tap the “Join order” button.
  2. Select items to add to the cart. Then tap “View cart” to proceed.
  3. Confirm that selected items are in the cart. Tap “Review order” to proceed.
  4. Review the details, select the payment profile and tap “Next.”
  5. The order is complete when the “You’re all set!” screen appears.
  6. Once an order is complete, the cart page will show a green check mark next to the participant’s name.

Larger Group Order Features

How do I split the bill?

When starting your large group order, you can split the bill up to 18 ways by selecting “Guests pay for themselves.”

  • For the “Guests pay for themselves” option, participants will have to be logged into their Uber Eats account in order to provide payment information.
  • For the “Creator pays for everyone” option, participants can be logged into their Uber Eats account or check out as a guest.

Large group orders can be split up to 18 ways. This cap is applied automatically in the app. So, when the 19th participant joins, they will receive an error message that states “Reached participant limit” and will not be able to join the order. At this point, the participant may contact the order creator or create a new order.

How are the fees and tips split among participants?

With the “Guests pay for themselves” option, participants pay for themselves. In these cases, fees and tips are split accordingly:

  • Flat fees (i.e., delivery fees) are split evenly among participants.
  • Each participant pays their own percentage of percent-based fees (i.e., service fees and taxes).
  • Each participant is responsible for setting their own tip amount.

Can I pre-schedule orders?

Yes, orders can be scheduled up to 7 days in advance.

If selecting multiple restaurants, will multiple unique links need to be shared?

Yes, each group order restaurant will have a unique link. For example, if your group order includes 3 restaurants, 3 links will need to be shared among the group. You can view all your carts from the carts tab simultaneously.

Managing Large Group Orders

When will restaurants be notified of the scheduled order?

The restaurant will get notified as soon as the order is placed, then once again 30 minutes prior to the scheduled delivery time. In addition, the Uber for Business support team will reach out 1.5 hours before the courier is scheduled to pick up the order.

When is the first scheduled order time available for a restaurant after it opens?

One hour. For example, if a restaurant opens at 11 AM, the first available delivery time is 12 PM.

Will participants be automatically notified when they can start adding items to the group order?

No, the group order creator will have to share a group order link with participants.

As the creator, can I add additional items to the order?

Yes, creators can add items to the order.

Can I restrict participants from joining the group order if they are forwarded the link?

There is currently no way to restrict participants from joining if they are forwarded the link. However, creators are able to remove individuals or items from the order before checking out.

Delivery Information

Can all participants track the delivery?

Yes, all participants will be able to track the delivery in their personal Uber Eats app or on ubereats.com.

Will my courier arrive by car or bike?

Orders are dispatched based on courier availability. However, any orders over 50 items automatically dispatch a car.

What happens if an order is canceled?

If you cancel your order, you will receive a refund only if you cancel before the restaurant starts prepping the order. You may not receive a refund if you cancel after the restaurant has started prepping the order.

If your order is canceled by the restaurant or courier, you will receive a refund.

What happens if an item is missing or incorrect?

Participants can contact support directly for the appropriate refunds. For large group orders, a dedicated support team interacts with restaurants and couriers to ensure customer satisfaction. Note: If you would still like the item to be delivered, you will be required to place a new order.

  • Keep in mind that, for the “Creator pays for everyone” options, only the order creator can receive a refund or appeasement. With “Guests pay for themselves,” participants must individually call support to request a refund.

What happens if a courier cancels an order?

If the courier cancels in-app, Uber Eats automatically dispatches another courier. If 4 couriers cancel in-app, the order is permanently canceled and customers are notified so they can place a new order.
