Understand Payments Compliance: Why Uber Needs Your Information

As part of our services provision, we may collect payments from users of the Uber apps on your behalf and disburse your earnings. This service provision qualifies as a regulated payment service under UK payments laws. As a result, Uber is subject to certain regulatory requirements that aim to reduce the risk of financial crime, such as fraud and money laundering, and other undesirable or illegal activities. Below you will find additional information regarding the legal framework and its relation to processes such as your onboarding process and other procedures applicable to your activity on the Uber platform. Understanding the rationale behind our request for specific documents during your onboarding and how we use this information, as well as the data collected during your activity with Uber, will help provide clarity and enhance your experience.

Uber as a regulated entity is subject to payments compliance regulations

As part of Uber’s services provision to you, we may also process your payments. As such we are subject to regulations that are relevant in the context of our partnership with you. More specifically, the Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing and Transfer of Funds (Information on the Payer) Regulations 2017 and related regulations, require us to conduct certain checks at the start of our partnership, as well as on an ongoing basis during our partnership. We will describe what this means for you in more detail in the following section.

What does it mean for you?

Customer due diligence

As part of your onboarding we need to verify your identity and confirm your payment details. Customer Identification is a key requirement for Uber and all of the documents that you provide as part of your onboarding process are used for this purpose. In the broader context of payments regulation, customer identification helps prevent financial crime and manage risk in a broad sense.

Uber’s approach to risk management

As a regulated entity, we have the obligation to manage our activities, including partnerships, according to what is commonly called “risk appetite”. In other words, Uber must ensure that its activities stay within its risk appetite. Having verified your identity with all the provided documents gives us a better understanding of who you are. If, upon review of the provided documents and/or your activities on the platform, there is evidence indicating fraud, a breach of Uber’s terms or a breach of relevant laws or regulations, we reserve the right to terminate our partnership with you.

Financial crime; Money Laundering and Terrorist financing prevention

One of the key aspects of the payment regulations we need to comply with are requirements that aim to prevent money laundering and terrorism financing. Throughout your partnership with us, we will periodically review the documents you provided during your onboarding as well as monitor your activity on the platform.

The type of activity we may look into are for example; changes in your legal entity structure or the transactional activity that comes from your operations.

Please note that we have zero tolerance towards partners that conduct unlawful activities. Based on our review of transactions and supporting documentation we may decide to terminate your access to the Uber platform permanently.
