Once you accept a ride request, you can communicate with your rider using the Uber app. Here’s how:
Send a message
To message your rider:
- Swipe up on the white bar at the bottom of your screen
- Tap the chat icon, which is next to the rider’s name
- Enter your message and press SEND
Your rider will get a notification of your message. If they reply, you’ll see their message in the app, and it will be read aloud to you. You can then send a “thumbs-up” as a quick acknowledgment.
Place a call
To call your rider:
- Tap the chat icon first
- Then select the phone icon in the top right corner
- Wait for the call to connect with your rider
Important notes:
- Messaging your rider through the app is free, as all messages are carried over a data connection.
- Use in-app messaging to avoid international roaming charges.
- The cost of calling depends on your phone’s plan. The app anonymizes your number and forwards the call to the rider’s number. So you can expect the call cost to be similar to what you would pay to call a local phone number.
- The app also anonymizes the rider’s number to protect privacy; these numbers change and cannot be saved.
- If you’re driving for UberX Share, make sure to contact the correct rider.
- Personal information remains private; riders won’t have access to your number after the trip ends.
