What is CTP?
Every car used on a public road must have valid Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance that provides coverage for your liability for causing the death of, or injury to any other person, including passengers.
CTP provides cover for bodily injuries only. CTP does not protect you against any claim for property damage, i.e. damage to your own car or other people's property.
In Victoria, each vehicle is required to pay CTP premiums to the Transport Accident Commission (TAC).
What can I claim?
Every person who suffers physical or mental injury as a direct result of a transport accident may claim compensation from TAC. If as a result of the injury, your doctor recommends a TAC approved treatment or service, TAC will pay for you. Apart from medical treatment, you may also claim for financial support based on your pre-accident weekly earnings.
What if I'm at-fault?
TAC does not consider who was at-fault in a transport accident. Even if you were at-fault in causing a transport accident, you may still receive the approved medical treatments and claim statutory benefits if your car has valid registration and the accident was reported to the Police.
The exception is where you are convicted of a serious driving offence in causing the accident.
What if I'm not at-fault?
If you are injured in an accident that is caused by the driver of another car, then you may claim for the full benefits as allowed under the TAC scheme.
Do I need to buy more insurance if I drive for Uber?
TAC does not pay for any property damage such as damage to your car or another car. Uber requires all Driver Partners to have at least third party property insurance to cover liability that you may incur for damage caused to another person's property. You are also encouraged to purchase comprehensive insurance cover, so that you will be protected for your own car's damage if an accident occurs.
