It’s a requirement that all driver-partners and delivery people register for an ABN (Australian Business Number).
If you do not have an existing ABN, Uber recommends registering yourself for an ABN as a ‘Sole Trader’ or ‘Individual’. Once you update the tax details on your Uber account with your Individual ABN, no additional steps are required.
If you have an existing ABN registered as a company, partnership or trust and intend to use your existing business to provide services on the Uber platform, you may use that. You will also need to provide a valid supporting document that confirms your association with the ABN.
Please note that your ABN will need to be valid and active.
Once submitted, the document may take up to 48 hours to be approved. Once approved, you’ll be able to start or continue going online if there are no other issues with your account.
You can get an ABN through these options:
Driver partners: The ATO requires all rideshare drivers to register for GST.
Delivery people: We recommend that you contact the ATO or a taxation professional for specific advice on GST registration.
