Generally, the following documents are required:
- The renter’s name is essential for processing a reservation; without it, the reservation cannot be completed.
- The renter’s name should only include Latin characters, hyphens, apostrophes, and spaces. First and last names must be 2–15 characters long.
- The renter must present himself at the rental counter with his physical driver’s license with at least one year of validity, and with his credit card with sufficient funds for the payment of the deposit to pick up the car. If several people are renting the vehicle, all must be present with their respective licenses and credit cards.
- A physical driver’s license valid for at least one year. Some suppliers may require a longer period of validity, check the “Terms and Conditions” that will appear at the moment of making your reservation.
- If renting in a country different from the one that issued their driver’s license, or if the renter’s name as shown on their driver’s license contains non-Latin characters, they must present and carry an international driving permit (IDP).
- A credit card in the name of the person who will be driving for payment and a security deposit.
- An official ID of the driver, INE if the driver is Mexican, and/or passport if the driver is a foreigner.
- Any additional identification or documentation specified by the car rental company.
The security deposit is a common practice in the car rental industry to protect both the car rental company and the user. It serves as a form of insurance in case of any unforeseen events during the rental period, such as damage to the vehicle or non-compliance with rental conditions. The deposit helps cover possible repair costs, fuel expenses, or unpaid fines.
The exact amount of the deposit may vary depending on the car rental company and the type of car you choose, but it is usually around 2,500 USD. Keep in mind that car rental companies usually accept credit or debit cards for the deposit, and some only accept Visa or Mastercard.
Be assured that the deposit is refundable, as long as there are no inconveniences at the end of the rental contract. Also, a renter cannot rent multiple vehicles during the same time period.
To know the exact requirements regarding documents and accepted payment methods, it is essential to review the “Terms and Conditions” of the car rental company before booking to make sure you meet all the requirements or that you have the accepted payment method.
