Insurance in NSW

What is CTP?
Every car used on a public road must have valid Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance (also known as a Green Slip) that provides coverage for your liability for causing the death of or injury to any other person, including passengers.
CTP provides cover for bodily injuries only. CTP does not protect you against any claim for property damage, i.e. damage to your own car or other people's property.
CTP is purchased separately from car registration. From 1 April 2018 onwards, every private car in metro regions is required to pay an additional charge of 10 cents per km (or 6.6 cents per km in country regions) when the car carries a fare-paying passenger. Uber collects this charge from your Rider and pays the State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA) directly on your behalf.

What can I claim?
For accidents occurring after 1 December 2017, every injured person can claim statutory benefits for up to six months, which includes loss of income and reasonable and necessary medical expenses. Victims who suffer more serious injuries may claim benefits beyond six months.

What if I'm at-fault?
Even if you are at-fault in causing a car accident, you may still claim statutory benefits for up to six months. The exception is when you are charged with or convicted of a serious driving offence in causing the accident.

What if I'm not at-fault?
If you are injured in an accident that is caused by the driver of another car, you should lodge a claim with the CTP insurer of the other car.

Do I need to buy more insurance if I drive for Uber?
Yes, the law requires every ridesharing vehicle to have at least AUD 5,000,000 insurance cover against third party property damage. This is separate from CTP and it provides coverage for your liability to a third party if you cause damage to their property. You are also encouraged to purchase comprehensive insurance cover, so that you will be protected for your own car's damage if an accident occurs.
