Pickup Preferences

Pickup Preferences lets riders share specific preferences with drivers to improve the pickup experience, making it easier for drivers to find and support riders who need extra help.

Overview

Pickup preferences are available in the Uber app for eligible trips in supported areas. Any rider who wants more support at pickup—including seniors, riders with disabilities, and Uber Health riders—can turn on Pickup preferences.

Preferences are “set once and done,” meaning they stay saved on your account for future eligible trips until you choose to change or turn them off. The setting is divided into two main sections: * How drivers should signal their arrival: You can choose multiple signal options using toggle switches. Options include: * Contact me at pickup * Call out my name at pickup * Flash vehicle lights at pickup * Honk the horn at pickup (availability may vary by local law)

  • How drivers can identify you: You can select a single identifying option (radio button), such as:
    • I wear tinted glasses and/or use a white cane
    • I use a cane / crutches / walker
    • I use a manual wheelchair
    • None of these apply

Note: Driver fares, wait-time payments, cancellation policies, and rider fares are not affected or altered by Pickup preferences. Drivers are expected to make a reasonable effort to follow these preferences while complying with local laws and safety guidelines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Driver FAQs

What are Rider Pickup preferences?

Rider Pickup preferences are optional notes and settings shared by riders (such as mobility aid details or arrival signaling requests) to help you locate and support them safely at pickup.

How will I know if a rider has special pickup instructions?

After accepting a trip, if the rider has saved preferences, a Pickup preferences or Review preferences button will appear on the pickup (PUDO) screen. The first time you encounter this feature, a brief in-app educational prompt will highlight how to view these rider-requested details.

Where do I view the preferences, and how do I contact the rider?

When parked at the pickup location, tap the Review preferences / Pickup preferences button to view the details (e.g., “Look for a rider with a walker” or “Call out rider’s name”). If the rider selected “Contact me at pickup,” you will also see a tailored contact button (Call rider, Message rider, or Contact rider) using standard in-app masked calls and messaging.

Does Pickup preferences affect my driver earnings or cancellation policies?

No. Pickup preferences do not alter driver fares, wait-time payments, or cancellation fee structures. They are designed to facilitate smooth pickups and reduce unnecessary cancellations.

Rider FAQs

How do I set up or update my Pickup preferences?

You can turn on, update, or change your Pickup preferences before requesting a trip by following either of these paths in the Uber app: * Option 1: Account > Settings > Ride Preferences > Pickup preferences * Option 2: Account > Settings > Accessibility > Pickup preferences (under Pickup coordination)

From there, select how drivers should signal arrival and how drivers can identify you. Your selections will automatically save to your account for future eligible trips.

Will I have to set these instructions for every trip?

No. Pickup preferences are persistent and will remain active on your account and shared automatically with drivers for future eligible trips until you change or turn them off.

How do I turn off Pickup preferences?

Go to Account > Settings > Ride Preferences (or Accessibility) > Pickup preferences. Turn off the arrival signal toggles or select “None of these apply” under driver identification.

What if Pickup preferences are not available in my area?

Pickup preferences are rolling out gradually. If the feature is not yet available in your market, you can still use in-app messages or calls to coordinate pickup with your driver.

What if my driver did not follow my Pickup preferences?

Pickup preferences help give drivers visibility into your needs, but they do not alter standard fare, wait-time, or cancellation rules. If you experienced a failed pickup or issue, you can reach out through Support for trip review under standard policies.
