Understanding the Send a Ride feature

Send a Ride is a stress-free way to cover an Uber ride for someone else by sending them a voucher.

You set the number of rides and the coverage limit, then share the voucher link using any messaging app. Once the recipient accepts the voucher, it’s saved to their Uber Wallet and automatically applied to their next eligible ride request, giving them full control over the trip.

You only pay for what is actually used, up to the limit you set and after the trip ends. Any additional cost will be charged from the person who’s riding.

How long is the voucher valid?

The voucher is valid for 24 hours after you create it and expires automatically.

How does the payment work?

You will only be charged for the amount of the voucher that the recipient uses, up to the spending limit you set ($25, $50 or $100). We process the payment after the recipient completes the trip, charging the payment method you used to create the voucher.

Example:

  • If you set a $50 limit, but the ride only costs $15, you are charged $15.

  • If the ride costs $60, you are charged $50, and the recipient pays the remaining $10.

  • If the recipient does not book a trip, you are not charged.

Note: Recipients must have a credit card as a valid payment method in their account to cover any costs beyond the voucher limit. This feature only allows payments made with the user’s personal profile.

What happens if the recipient doesn’t use the entire voucher amount?

You will only be charged for the portion of the voucher that was used. Any unused amount expires after the recipient’s trip is completed.

How do I know if the voucher was used by the recipient?

You can monitor the status of the vouchers you’ve sent by going to your Wallet. There, you can see if the voucher is:

Available:

  • Waiting to be accepted: Voucher was created, but hasn’t been added to recipient’s Wallet.

  • Accepted: Voucher has been added by the recipient but not yet used on a trip. This will also be the status if a voucher is partially used. For example, you have 2 rides on the voucher and only one ride has been redeemed.

Past Vouchers:

  • Completed: When voucher is partially or fully used on a trip.

  • Canceled: Voucher canceled by the sender.

  • Expired: Voucher has expired and not used at all.

Note: Voucher recipients can only see available vouchers in their Wallet.

What can I customize on the voucher?

You can define 2 key settings: 1. The number of rides (one-way or round trip) and, 2. The cost limit you want to cover per ride ($25, $50 or $100 USD).

Can I send the same voucher to multiple people?

No. Vouchers sent from your personal account are unique and can only be accepted by one recipient.

The voucher link you share can only be used once. As the sender, you are responsible for sharing the link privately and ensuring it is delivered to the intended recipient. Once the link is accepted by someone, it cannot be used by anyone else.

Why can’t I send a voucher?

This feature is being gradually rolled out, so it may not be available to all users. It also has daily and weekly limits on the number of vouchers that can be sent.

Why can’t I create a voucher right now?

Usage limits currently apply. Our current limits include:

  • One voucher per day.
  • No vouchers can be created if you have an outstanding balance.
  • The payment method must be a valid credit card on a personal profile.

What kind of receipts/invoices will I get?

Recipients get the usual trip receipt showing the voucher applied. If you send a voucher, you will not have visibility to the recipient’s pickup or drop-off locations, in order to respect their privacy.

Can I cancel a voucher after sending?

Yes, unused vouchers can be canceled from the Wallet. Canceled vouchers are marked as such, and no charges apply. Expired vouchers cannot be cancelled.

Voucher Recipient FAQs

How do I accept the voucher?

  1. Select the link you received.
  2. The voucher opens in the Uber app (or prompts you to download the app if you don’t have it).

How do I use the voucher?

Once accepted, the voucher is added to your Wallet. At checkout, the voucher is applied automatically if it’s valid.

The voucher will cover the trip cost up to the amount limit defined by the sender. If the total cost of the trip exceeds this limit, your default payment method will be charged for the difference.

Important: The voucher expires 24 hours after the sender created it, regardless of when you accept it.

Can I use the voucher for more than one ride?

Yes, but only if the voucher was sent for two rides (a round trip). Any unused amount from a single-ride voucher will expire after the trip is completed and cannot be used for a second ride.

Will the voucher cover any additional costs such as tips related to the ride?

Send a ride voucher does cover tips or extra costs related to the trip. Costs covered for the trip will be limited by the voucher amount, and rider/recipient still covers additional costs.

Example:

  • For a voucher worth up to $25:

    • If ride + tips = $30, then the voucher covers $25 and you pay $5.

    • If ride + tips = $20, then the voucher covers $20 and you pay $0 (nothing).

The voucher did not apply

Check the status by going to Wallet to confirm the voucher is available. Ensure the ride meets the voucher rules (correct amount, 1–2 trips). If still available and valid, retry booking. If the issue persists, please reach out to Support.

Can I apply a voucher after my ride is completed?

No. Vouchers must be accepted and active before requesting a ride. Vouchers cannot be applied for a completed ride retroactively.
