Concerns about Deaf/HOH Drivers

We're always working to make the Uber experience as accessible as possible for riders and driver-partners.
CONTACTING THE DRIVER
The ability to call a deaf or hard of hearing driver-partner is turned off for riders. Instead, you will be directed to text the driver if they need to communicate with you. You can text your driver ahead of their arrival to let them know exactly where you are standing.
COMMUNICATION WITH DRIVER WHILE ON A TRIP
We believe in technology's power to bring people together and create opportunities where they didn't exist before.
To work towards this, you will now see a special card in the Uber feed where you can learn to sign basic phrases in ASL. Once you tap it, you will be taken to a page where they can select the basics, like "Hello" and "Thank You", or spell out their name. You can use these phrases to better communicate with a driver who is deaf or hard of hearing.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
The requirements to drive with Uber includes a background check process, a valid driver's license, and a clear driving record. We work to ensure the Uber app is accessible for both riders and drivers.
NAVIGATION
Once a partner accepts a ride, riders will be prompted to enter their destination in advance rather than telling the driver and asking them to enter the destination manually. The app can then provide turn-by-turn directions for the driver. If you need to make an update to your destination or add a stop, please update your trip within your app in order to ensure that the driver is aware of these updates.
