Uber has a new option on its platform, called Taxi. With Taxi, you can be matched with a local Chicago Taxi. Use the Uber app to choose the pickup and dropoff location and then get matched with a taxi. Once matched with a taxi driver, riders won’t be able to change their dropoff destination.
You’ll pay an upfront price and any applicable taxes, fees, surcharges, and tolls. The amount presented will not be adjusted at the end of the trip if the actual route has fees that differ from the estimated route or the length, duration, or route of the trip changes. However, the price may be adjusted at the end of the trip if the actual route has surcharges or tolls that differ from the estimated route.
All taxi drivers licensed by the Chicago Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) undergo background checks conducted by BACP. However, the background checks required for taxi drivers are different from the background checks required for rideshare drivers performing trips on the Uber platform. On Taxi rides, certain Uber safety features will not be available, including, among other things, RideCheck and Verify Your Ride.
Uber will also share some of your information including your contact details and pickup and dropoff locations with the taxi driver and the driver’s taxi e-hail application provider to help complete your ride.
A photo of your taxi driver may not be available in the rider app, but you can confirm you’re getting into the correct vehicle by verifying the vehicle license plate in-app with the license plate on the taxi. Taxi drivers are also required to display their BACP license inside of the taxi, and you should be able to match the driver name in the Uber app with the name on the BACP license in the vehicle.
