Steps to complete for an alcohol or tobacco delivery

Alcohol and tobacco deliveries come with extra responsibility, as required by law. If you skip the sobriety and age checks, you could face serious consequences, like losing alcohol delivery access and/or regulatory fines or other penalties.

The steps to completing alcohol and tobacco deliveries:

Step 1: Check sobriety

The customer will receive a notification to meet you at the door with their ID. When they do, check that they don’t appear intoxicated — you can reference in-app guidelines developed according to guidance from the International Alliance for Responsible Drinking (IARD). Common signs of intoxication include having an unsteady walk, poor coordination, or slurred or mumbled speech.

Step 2: Check whether the recipient looks over 25 years old

To help you comply with the law when delivering alcohol, you will now need to confirm whether the customer looks over 25. In the cases where you are not sure, you should default to indicating they might be under 25. Delivering alcohol to under 18 year olds without ID checks puts you at risk of a criminal conviction which could result in fines and delivery restrictions.

If the customer looks over 25 years old:

Step 3: Enter the customer date of birth

You’ll be prompted in the app to enter the customer date of birth as an additional safety step. The date of birth should match a customer who is clearly over 18 years old.

Step 4: Complete the delivery

If the customer is not intoxicated and clearly over 25, hand over the order and complete the trip.

If the customer looks under 25 years old:

Step 3: Request ID

Customers must present a valid, government-issued photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence, if they appear under 25. Ask them to present their ID so that you can verify their age. Failure to check an ID is against the law and could result in you becoming ineligible for deliveries containing alcohol.

Step 4: Check identity

Check that the customer matches their ID photo. Check that the customer’s name in the Driver app matches the name on the provided ID.

Step 5: Confirm age

For some deliveries you’ll be prompted in your app to use your phone’s camera to scan the customer’s ID and confirm that they’re 18 or over. Reminder, please don’t use your personal camera on your phone to photograph a user’s ID, it’s a violation of privacy laws.

Step 6: Complete the delivery

If the customer is not intoxicated and 18 or over, hand over the order and complete the trip.

When the delivery can’t be completed

If the customer is intoxicated, underage or has an expired or invalid ID, you’ll be prompted to return the items to the shop. When this happens, you will be paid for your time to complete the return trip.

Your safety during any delivery is a priority. Please report any safety incidents via the Uber app and check out resources to help you stay safe.
