Substitution at Uber Eats - UK

Asking someone else to deliver with your account

You can register a person, at any time and for any reason, as a substitute to deliver on your behalf. They will need to be fully registered on your account, including completing all checks, before they can do any deliveries for you. This is to verify that they have a right to work in the UK and have no unspent criminal convictions. If your substitute is not fully registered before taking a trip, you may permanently lose access to your account.

You also need to ensure that they meet the below safety conditions. You are fully responsible for all activities performed by your substitute while they are using your account. It is also your responsibility to make sure that they meet all of the requirements to deliver with Uber Eats before they take their first trip.

You can register anyone to be your substitute, provided they satisfy the following basic safety conditions:

  • They are at least 18 years of age
  • They have the right to work in the UK
  • They do not have any unspent criminal convictions
  • They have not had their Uber account deactivated in the past
  • They have the relevant insurance, where required
  • They know how to perform deliveries safely and in accordance with applicable road safety, food safety and health and safety laws.

More safety information is available in the Learning Centre of the Driver App.

Uber Eats operates a zero tolerance approach towards anyone who fails to meet their obligations in relation to their substitute.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your appointed substitute has the right to work in the UK. This is defined as:

  • British or Irish citizens
  • or those with indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK,
  • or those with a right of abode (allowed to live or work in the UK without any immigration restrictions),
  • or those with ‘Settled’ status or leave under the EU Settlement Scheme,
  • or those with the right to work as part of their visa.

There are three ways to carry out a right to work check, depending on the type of citizenship your substitute has:

  • All citizens: A manual right to work check: For example, checking a passport or current Immigration Status Document issued by the Home Office. A full list of documents - and the steps you should take to conduct a manual check - can be found here on GOV.UK
  • British and Irish citizens only: A right to work check using an identity service provider (IDSP)
  • Non-British and non-Irish Citizens: A Home Office online right to work check: If your appointed substitute has an eVisa, a Biometric Residence Card, Biometric Residence Permit or a frontier Worker Permit, they may be able to evidence their right to work using the online service here on GOV.UK. The steps you should take to conduct an online check can be found on GOV.UK

In order to be successfully registered, Uber Eats will verify if your substitute has the right to work in the UK. If your substitute fails this check, you may lose access to your account..
