What is the One Less Car experiment?
Uber Australia, with research partner Human8, is conducting an experiment in the Sydney metro area where participants give up their cars for 4 weeks to explore alternative transportation methods. The project aims to understand how Australians can reduce car usage and find ways to make it easier. Visit this page for more info.
When does the experiment start?
The experiment will be conducted from March 17 to April 13, 2025, with participant recruitment beginning on February 25, 2025.
How will my information be used?
Your data will be used to inform in-house research, communication, and educational presentations, as well as for external research reports and media communications to share experiment findings, all strictly for non-commercial purposes, including improving consumer insights, enhancing products, and establishing a knowledge database on the products. For further information, please visit Human8’s Privacy Policy and Uber’s Privacy Policy.
What transportation alternatives are being tested?
The project explores various transport modes like ridesharing, public transit, cycling, and walking to determine effective substitutes for private car ownership.
How are participants selected?
Participants must live within 20km of the Sydney Metro area or in Paramatta or Westmead, have good access to alternative transport modes, and be willing to engage in a 4-week experiment where they will track their mobility behaviour with the chance to access exclusive savings and perks.
How do I participate?
Sydney residents can complete this eligibility survey to see if they qualify to participate in this experiment.
Will there be discounts for using the alternative transportation options if I participate?
If you are selected and participate in the experiment, you will earn entries into a special prize draw with a prize pool of $2000 in GiftPay vouchers to spend at top retailers like Apple, JB Hi-Fi, Myer, Coles, Woolworths etc. Some participants may also have the option to choose a free or paid bundle of exclusive discounts and promotions on transport alternatives to help them go car-free during the experiment.
What kind of feedback will you be collecting from participants?
Participants will be asked to answer short surveys for the duration of the experiment. The surveys may include questions about how participants are moving around, which modes of transport they use, how frequently, and general feedback on their experience trying to reduce their car reliance.
What happens at the end of the experiment?
You will receive a communication informing you of the conclusion of the experiment. Any remaining credit or benefits associated with the promo bundles will expire, unless otherwise informed.
