In markets where Preferred Currency Pricing is available, Uber may assign your home currency as your preferred currency by default. Preferred Currency Pricing allows riders to see pricing in their familiar home currency — avoiding the hassle of doing currency conversion math in their head when requesting a ride. It has a 1.5% fee, compared to foreign currency transaction fees on many credit or debit cards, which are typically higher (around 2-3%).
You may select your preference under “Preferred Currency” in your Uber wallet settings at any time to pay in the local currency and avoid Uber’s 1.5% fee.
Preferred Currency Pricing is available only for on-demand rides such as UberX, UberXL, Uber Black, and Uber Green. Please note that rides like Rentals, Reserve, Scheduled Rides, those with 3rd-party partners, and Uber Eats or Delivery orders are not eligible.
Preferred Currency Pricing is not available for your business profile that is linked to your employer or similar organization, but you’ll still be able to manually opt-in to Preferred Currency Pricing for eligible trips on your personal profile.
Prices will be shown in the currency of the region you’re in. You may be charged variable conversion fees with an exchange rate set by your payment method provider, and foreign transaction fees may apply. Check your credit card or payment method terms for more information.
You may choose to opt out of Preferred Currency Pricing at any time. Simply go to your Wallet, select Set preferred currency, and choose Always pay in local currency.
If you choose to pay in a preferred currency instead of the local currency, Uber will charge you a fee equal to 1.5% of the value of the total trip fare (including all applicable taxes and fees required by law, but excluding any tips).
If your home currency is USD, CAD, EUR, or GBP then Preferred Currency Pricing allows you to pay with your home currency for foreign transactions (e.g., rides) within the United States, Canada, and the Eurozone. If you are booking a ride in a country where Preferred Currency Pricing is not supported, trip fares will be displayed in the local currency only (even if a Preferred Currency is designated in your wallet).
Preferred Currency Pricing is currently unavailable if you’re applying Uber Cash or Uber One credits, Vouchers, or using a business profile for your transaction. The availability of preferred currency pricing payment types is at Uber’s discretion.
Additionally, Preferred Currency Pricing is only available when you use a debit card, credit card or a digital wallet (e.g. Apple Pay) to pay for your ride. Other payment options, including Split Fare, Uber Cash, Uber Money, Cash and Gift Cards, are also not eligible for Preferred Currency Pricing.
You may update your payment method if needed; however, the currency selected at checkout will remain unchanged and will apply to any new eligible payment method.
Once your ride is confirmed, you may only switch the payment method you would like to use for the trip, not the currency selection. Once you make your currency selection, charges on any new eligible payment method added to your wallet will be processed in your updated preferred currency.
Uber’s Preferred Currency Pricing 1.5% currency conversion fee described above will only apply to your trip fare at the time of your trip request, and will not be applied to any tip you would like to pay your driver. Tips will be charged in your preferred currency for the corresponding transaction, and the 1.5% fee will not be applied.
Cancellation fees, clearing of arrears, and changing destinations will all be charged in the same currency as charged on the corresponding transaction.
For all preferred currency transactions, we apply the mid-market exchange rate with no additional markup. You may view the applicable rate in the fare breakdown screen by selecting the tooltip (ℹ icon) on the “confirm details” page before requesting your ride
