Verifying my identity

Why does Uber require account and/or identity verification?

At Uber, safety is a top priority. We require users of certain products to verify their accounts or identities to enhance user safety and help prevent unauthorized account access. You can learn more on our Verified Account Badge page.

How does Uber verify my accounts and identities?

In some countries, riders provide their ID number or photo of their identification card. Uber verifies the ID and checks that no other account is associated with that document.

In other countries riders can take a selfie for account verification, which is kept secure, never shared with your driver, and is deleted after a set period.

If we cannot verify your account or identity (including because you fail to submit the required information), you may be unable to use certain Uber features like trip requests, item deliveries, or cash payments.

Does Uber use third parties to verify accounts and identities?

In some cases, Uber uses third parties for account verification. Those third parties are contractually prohibited from using your information for any purpose other than identity verification. They are also prohibited from retaining your documents or information beyond what is necessary to perform their services on Uber’s behalf.

Does Uber share my personal information with drivers, delivery people, or other third parties?

Some Uber services and features require sharing personal data with other users, or at a user’s request. For example, to make rides or deliveries possible, we share your first name and requested pickup, dropoff, or delivery locations with drivers or delivery people. We also may confirm with them that you’ve completed an account or identity verification process. Uber does not otherwise share your information with drivers or delivery people.

We may also share such data with our affiliates, subsidiaries, and partners, for legal reasons or in connection with claims or disputes. For more information, please see the Uber Privacy Notice.

Do drivers and delivery people verify their identity?

Yes, all drivers and delivery people undergo identity verification, including submitting documents and taking periodic selfies to confirm their identity. They must also submit new documents if their verification documents expire.

How does Uber protect my identity information?

Uber is committed to keeping your personal data safe. We encrypt and secure all personal data submitted for verification, retaining it only as long as necessary and in accordance with our Privacy Notice and applicable laws.
