Authorization Holds Are Not Actual Charges

What is an Authorization Hold?

An authorization hold (pending charge) is a temporary amount shown to verify that your payment method is valid.

Please be assured that this is not a final charge; it will be automatically voided (refunded) once the actual fare is finalized.

In most cases, no action is required on your part.

Refund Timeline

Authorization holds are typically released within 1–2 business days. Once released, the refund usually appears on your original payment method within 10 business days, though this varies by financial institution.

Please contact your bank or card issuer directly for specific details.

If your financial institution is located outside of Japan, it may take over a month for the refund to be completed.

Why the Amount May Vary

You may see multiple temporary authorization holds for a single trip before the final fare is determined. This happens because individual amounts are temporarily verified when trip details change or additional fees are incurred.

Common examples of authorization holds include:

• The upfront price confirmed at the time of the request.
• Fare adjustments due to a change in destination.
• The amount of a tip added via the app after the trip.

(If a request is canceled, an authorization hold may also be issued for the cancellation fee.)

Rest assured that only the final confirmed amount will be charged, and all other authorization holds will be automatically voided.

< For Debit Card Users >

Even when using a debit card, an authorization hold is not an actual charge. All amounts except for the final confirmed fare will be automatically refunded.

However, due to the nature of debit cards, these holds may appear on your statement as if they were actual charges. Additionally, it may take over a month for the refund to be processed, which is longer than other payment methods.

Since the timing and display of refunds depend on your bank’s processing systems, please contact your financial institution directly for more details.

You can verify the final amount in your Uber Receipt. The receipt in the Uber app will only show the final confirmed fare.
